Yes, Island students can use their volunteer hours towards their Community Service Bursary!
The Community Service Bursary, administered by Student Financial Assistance Services with the Department of Education & Lifelong Learning, is an award for PEI High School Students, Grade 10- Grade 12, who volunteer within their community. This bursary ranges from $300 to a maximum of $1,500 and will be sent directly to the students' post-secondary institution of choice. The bursary is calculated at a rate of $10 per volunteer hour with a minimum of 30 hours and a maximum of 150 hours.

As a province known for its hospitality, we’re excited to welcome the 2023 Canada Winter Games to Prince Edward Island. From February 18 – March 5, 2023, the Games will bring together 3,600 athletes, managers, and coaches, across 20 different sports, for the largest multi-sport event in the country. With a forecasted economic impact of over $100 million, the 29th edition of the Canada Games will be the largest event hosted in Prince Edward Island’s history.
There are three different types of volunteer roles available with the Games:
Pre-Games: The planning phases from now leading up to the Games in February 2023.
Games-time: The two weeks when the 2023 Canada Games will be held from February 18 to March 5, 2023.
All volunteers that sign up for Games-time roles are expected to volunteer at least 32 hours from February 18 to March 5, 2023. This can be done all in one week or can be spread across the two weeks of the Games.
There are more than 150 unique volunteer roles available during Games-time that will support many areas including but not limited to; sport operations, transportation, ticketing, food services, event services, merchandise sales, etc.
When applying to be a volunteer, everyone will be given the opportunity to select their preferences for venue locations and their top three choices for volunteer roles. The 2023 Canada Winter Games Host Society will do their best to provide volunteers with a preferred role at their preferred venue.
Yes and yes! We welcome people of all abilities to apply for a volunteer position with the Games, and we will work with you to determine how we can support you in your role. Please note, if you are volunteering with your aid/caregiver, they will also have to register as a Games-time volunteer.

The 2023 Canada Winter Games will be hosted in both of Canada’s Official Languages - English and French. Therefore, we will be recruiting English and French speaking volunteers. Applicants who indicate French language capability on their application will be required to demonstrate proficiency through a language proficiency screening process.
Yes, 2023 Canada Winter Games volunteers must be at least 16 years of age by February 1st, 2023. Those between the ages of 16 and 18 years are required to complete a parent/guardian consent form during their screening process.
Yes, the 2023 Canada Games Host Society will support this process for high school students to obtain their volunteer hours as a part of their requirements under the Community Service Bursary or Duke of Edinburgh. Please note, volunteers for the 2023 Canada Winter Games must be at least 16 years of age by February 1st, 2023. Those between the ages of 16 and 18 years are required to complete a parent/guardian consent form during their screening process.
An average volunteer shift is between four and eight hours. Shifts will depend on sport and venue schedules and will vary for each volunteer position. For example, an usher may need to start their shift 30 minutes before the venue opens to the public, while a medical volunteer may be required to start their shift 30 minutes before the competition begins.
All 2023 Canada Winter Games Volunteers will receive general Games orientation and role/venue specific training if they are selected prior to the start of the Games.
Yes, all Games-time volunteers will receive a high-quality complimentary uniform that will be handed out, along with an accreditation badge, closer to Games-time. The uniform will consist of a winter jacket, long-sleeved shirt, mid-layer full zip jacket, and toque. Volunteers working at outdoor events will need to ensure they are prepared for all weather conditions and dress accordingly. Volunteers will need to wear black snow pants when working outside. These will not be provided by the Games.
Yes! Please note: All Games-time volunteers will be required to register online and are responsible for their own transportation and accommodation arrangements.

Priority will be given to those living and working in Canada and have legal status in Canada. The 2023 Canada Winter Games Host Society will not provide letters of support to individuals outside of Canada needing to apply for travel permits.
