Day 5 Recap - What You Missed, What's Happening Thursday

ST JOHN'S - Team Quebec continued to rule the roads at the Canada Games on Wednesday snatching three of four cycling gold including a podium sweep in the men's road race while Team British Columbia completed a successful defense of their rugby sevens women's crown.

The men's para cyclists were the first out on the scenic undulating 10km loop along the rugged Newfoundland shoreline, Joesph Vachon powering to gold in impressive style crossing the line almost 10 minutes clear of Team Ontario silver medallist Daniel Bigu.

It was the second gold in three days for Vachon, who also took the win on Monday in the time trial.

Vachon's teammate Camille Rene also completed the gold double adding the women's para road race title to her time trial win.

The 110km men's race was packed with drama as Gabriel Seguin bravely launched an early solo break building a nearly three minute advantage four laps into the 11 lap race.

But Seguin, a time trial specialist, would be pulled back by the pack setting the stage for a sprint finish, Team Quebec's Jonathan Hinse getting ahead of teammates Jacob Roy and Seguin to snatch gold.

It would not be all Quebec's day as the women's from belle province were shutout of the medals in the women's 80km race won Team Alberta's Kahlen Anderson.

Over at Swilers Rugby Club Ontario and British Columbia clashed in both the men's and women's gold medal finals each coming away with a victory.

Women's defending champions Team British Columbia retained their gold with a 22-10 win while Team Ontario turned the tables in the men's final stopping BC 17-12.

Team Alberta took the women's bronze with a 21-10 decision over Nova Scotia while Quebec claimed third spot on the podium in the men's downing Alberta 17-15.

Quebec may be kings of the road but Nova Scotia rules the waves picking up another boat load of medals in the canoe and kayak competition at Quidi Vidi Lake.

According to the Games medal table Nova Scotia was sitting third on 14 gold all of them, with the exception of one in swimming, produced by the province's paddlers.

Eric Chouinard kicked off another bumper day taking gold in the C-1 200 metres while the IC-4 200m men, K-4 500m women, IC-4 500m men and C-2 500m mixed all contributed to the Nova Scotia haul.

Team Ontario also enjoyed a productive day taking gold in four finals, the men's K-2 200m, K-2 500m mixed, K-1 500m men's and C-1 500m women's.

As it is every night there was plenty of gold to be mined at  The Works Aquarena.

Team British Columbia's Maelle Sanborn, who qualified for the Canadian Olympic trials for Paris last year as a 14-year-old, continued to mark herself out as a potential future Olympian pocketing her third individual gold with a win in the women's 100m breaststroke.

Ken Stroud also hit the Canada Games golden hat trick with a win in the men's para 100m breaststroke.

Their teammate Elleigh Wise was also back on the podium kicking off the evening session with a win in the women's 200m freestyle.

It was also another big night in the pool for Team Ontario with Tazio Mastromatteo (men's 100m breaststroke), Isabella Cooper (women’s 200m butterfly), Gavin Schinkelshoek (men's 100m backstroke), Maxine Lavitt (para women's 100m breaststroke) and Teagen Ann Purvis (50m backstroke special Olympics women) all landing top of the podium.
